Porter Hamlin is a grief-stricken projectionist in a small-town vintage theater called The Magic. When he receives a cryptic letter his wife wrote to him before her death, he feels betrayed by the secrets it reveals. Secrets she kept from him during their long marriage. Then he receives more of her letters that anticipate future events before they unfold, letters that contain bizarre and detailed instructions for him to follow.

The more Porter tries to understand what's happening, the more he learns about the layers and folds of his life, his wife, and himself. He is determined to complete the quest laid out before him, if he can only figure out what it is.
